Tale As Old As Time

"Once upon a time, in a faraway land, a young prince lived in a shining castle. Although he had everything his heart desired, the prince was spoiled, selfish, and unkind. But then, one winter's night, an old beggar woman came to the castle and offered him a single rose in return for shelter from the bitter cold. Repulsed by her haggard appearance, the prince sneered at the gift and turned the old woman away. But she warned him not to be deceived by appearances, for beauty is found within. And when he dismissed her again, the old woman's ugliness melted away to reveal a beautiful enchantress. The prince tried to apologize, but it was too late, for she had seen that there was no love in his heart. And as punishment, she transformed him into a hideous beast and placed a powerful spell on the castle and all who lived there. Ashamed of his monstrous form, the beast concealed himself inside his castle, with a magic mirror as his only window to the outside world. The rose she had offered was truly an enchanted rose, which would bloom until his 21st year. If he could learn to love another, and earn her love in return by the time the last petal fell, then the spell would be broken. If not, he would be doomed to remain a beast for all time. As the years passed, he fell into despair and lost all hope. For who could ever learn to love a beast?" ~ The Prologue, Beauty and the Beast.

Appearance: The Beast is not of any one species of animal, but a mixture of several animals. He has the head structure and horns of a buffalo, the arms and body of a bear and the legs and tail of a wolf. The other minor features include the eyebrows of a gorilla, the nose and tusks of a wild boar and the mane of a lion. He also bears resemblance to mythical monsters like the Minotaur or a werewolf. The Beast also has blue eyes, the one physical feature that does not change whether he is a beast or a human. In the original versions he was described more like a cross between a lion and a mythical animal.

Personality: The Beast, though a prince and master of an enchanted castle, is anything but charming. He is, as Belle describes him, "mean, coarse and unrefined", despite the fact that it was precisely these characteristics that resulted in his being transformed into a monster in the first place. Add to this his ferocious temper, spoiled attitude and fierce appearance, he is not someone to be trifled with or even liked. He might be considered a spoiled child in some respects, especially given his rude impatience and what might be described as regular temper tantrums. Though it is not revealed why he acts this way, it can be theorized that he has inherited his father’s throne at a young age and has since become accustomed to having his own way. That is, of course, until he meets Belle, who, unlike his servants, is not afraid to argue with him. As he slowly grows fond of her, his attitude changes from one of blatant hostility to uncomfortable naiveté, uncertain now that he is inclined to care for someone other than himself. It is this change and his eagerness to please which endears Belle to him.
